Being a member of a fraternity requires a major financial obligation. This money does not go to “buying friends.” The friendship is free. Everything else takes money. Dues and fees goes to Chapter sustainability, events, promotional material, insurance payments, and philanthropic ventures. As a new member, Candidates are expected to prove the ability to meet these financial obligations.

The North American Inter-fraternal Conference, the main body for fraternity affairs, mandates that Chapters first make clear to a prospective new member the financial obligation placed on Candidates. Here are the dues and fees for the first semester:
- $90.00 Candidate Fee | A fee paid to the national office that affiliates the prospective new member with Sigma Nu. This fee pays for the Candidate’s Pin, a subscription to the fraternity’s magazine, and other payments due to the Fraternity. This fee must be paid before the Candidate Process can begin.
- $150.00 Candidate Dues | Candidate dues go directly to the Chapter. They are used to pay for the candidate’s insurance fees, the Candidate Education Program, and the Candidate Retreat. It also proves to the Treasurer that the Candidate can meet the financial burdens of membership.
- $220.00 Initiation Fee | A fee paid to the national office if and when the candidate meets the requirements for initiation. This fee pays for the Badge of Sigma Nu, a lifetime subscription to the fraternity’s magazine, and other payments due to the Fraternity.
